You do have a good point. The likes of mr. Shapiro (right-leaning moralists) have lost Russia around 100 years ago to the very commies the current US and EU democrats/socialists are on the path to becoming, and it turned out a planetary scale disaster. I guess my point (or mr. Shapiro's point, for this matter) is this: a) you cannot really walk into the exact same flowing water twice b) tribalism/identity politics of the left does not really make another Mussolini-following (nothing matters as long as we are winning) somewhat right-leaning caudillo good per se. We are not in January 1917-style Russia, and mr. Trump at times is doing something (or rather, says he will be doing, since he has not actually done anything yet) you would expect of comrade Bernie "I've spent my honeymoon @ Lubyanka" Sanders, not a republican leader.
I am with mr. Shapiro in that those "Bernie-style" things need to be called out, and the dear leader's feet should be kept to the fire to the fullest extent possible. As opposed to "we shall all group-around like a bunch of sticks (fascio) around the broomhandle that is our dear leader, because he is our leader and may do some great things and will likely do more of those great things if we just ignore some of his shortcomings and controversies", something the left does a lot.
